Werner Engelbrecht

Werner Engelbrecht started his career 1992 in the power generation industry in South Africa at Eskom as an Engineer in Training at Tutuka Power Station. During this period he was trained in the operations of a coal power plant. In 1995 he was appointed as Shift Manager during the commissioning of Majuba Power Station 650MW Unit 1 boiler and turbine plant. His responsibilities included the safe operation of the power station, liaison with contractors, maintenance and engineering during commissioning activities.

In 1996 he was appointed as System Engineer as part of the Majuba Power Plant construction team. His responsibilities were that of owner’s engineer and contract manager for the electrical plant construction for Units 2 to 6 until 2001.

In 2001 he was appointed as Senior Electrical Engineer at Sappi Ngodwana paper mill, in the province of Mpumalanga in South Africa. During this period he was the owners engineer and project manager for various electrical plant upgrade projects which included the 132kV switch yard upgrades, coal boiler plant drive motor upgrades, and 50MW and 65MW turbo generator control system upgrades.

In 2006 he was appointed as the Electrical Design Manager as part of the Eskom Grootvlei Power Plant return to service project team. The team was responsible for the refurbishment of 1.2GW Grootvlei Power Plant. During this time he also advised BioTherm Energy, and Independent Power Producer, on their co-generation projects in the sugar, paper and ferrochrome industry in South Africa.

From 2008 he was appointed at BioTherm Energy on a full time basis as Development Director. His responsibilities included the development of wind and co-generation projects in the sugar, paper and ferrochrome industry in South Africa. He was also responsible for bidding Biotherm solar PV projects during Round 1 to the Expedited Round of the REIPP program. After being appointed as Preferred Bidder for two 10MW solar PV projects in 2011 by the Department of Energy, he was responsible for the negotiation of the EPC Contracts for both projects and managed the construction and the operation of the projects. He is currently involved solar project development in South Africa and the Rest of Africa and is leading the EPC and PPA negotiations for the projects in the South Africa and the rest of Africa.

He is also is also a registered Professional Electrical Engineer at the Engineering Counsel of South Africa.
